China’s poverty alleviation efforts are of positive significance to the world, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said Monday.
Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, Zhao said that the rate of China’s contribution to the world’s poverty reduction has exceeded 70 percent of the total, with 750 million people in China having been removed from the list of the poverty stricken population.
“China has contributed to accelerating the world’s poverty reduction process. Poverty is a common threat mankind facing. Eliminating poverty is the primary goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
As the largest developing country, China has always placed poverty alleviation in a prominent position in governance. Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, 750 million people in China have been lifted out of poverty, which contributed to world poverty reduction of more than 70 percent,” said Zhao.
Zhao said data from the World Bank showed that 800 million people in China have been lifted out of poverty. This year marks the last year of China’s building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and it is also a year of securing a decisive victory in the fight against poverty, Zhao said, pointing out that China will lift all poverty-stricken people in rural areas out of poverty this year under the current standards, achieve poverty reduction related sustainable development goals 10 years ahead of schedule, and make historic contributions to poverty eradication and peaceful development worldwide.
China has recently released the report of “Eliminating Absolute Poverty – China’s Practice”, and will fully share its experience and practice in poverty reduction in various fields with the international community, Zhao said.
“China has provided assistance to the world’s poverty reduction. While promoting its own poverty reduction process, China has always provided assistance to developing countries within its capacity.
Let me cite a few examples. China has established the ‘China-UN Peace and Development Fund’ and the ‘South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund’, and has steadily promoted cooperation projects under the framework of the ‘East Asia Cooperation Initiative on Poverty Reduction’ and the ‘China-Africa poverty reduction and people’s welfare cooperation’.
China has provided assistance in the construction of 24 agricultural technology demonstration centers in Africa, benefiting more than 500,000 local people. China has also continuously deepened the synergy between joint construction of the Belt & Road Initiative and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” said Zhao.
According to the World Bank report, the joint construction of the Belt & Road is expected to help 7.6 million people out of extreme poverty and 32 million people out of moderate poverty, Zhao said, adding that China has also continued to help developing countries improve their capacity building through multilateral and bilateral channels and facilitate international cooperation in poverty reduction.
Zhao recalled that on the road to poverty alleviation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has never been absent. In the past 28 years, the Ministry has insisted on targeted poverty alleviation in the two national-level poverty-stricken counties of Jinping and Malipo in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Not long ago, the two counties officially shook off poverty, Zhao added.
“We will, as always, fulfill our responsibility of helping the poverty-stricken areas and consolidate the results of poverty alleviation.
At the same time, we will continue to share China’s experience in poverty alleviation and development with the world, promote international exchanges and cooperation in poverty reduction, and make contributions to the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” Zhao said.
