Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she will travel to Beijing in July at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Hasina revealed the information at media briefing on her 11-day tri-nation tour of Japan, Saudi Arabia and Finland at Ganabhaban, the Official Residence of Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Sunday.

It will be her first visit to China after forming a government for a third consecutive term. President Xi extended felicitations to Hasina on her party’s landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary elections held in December.

Addressing the media briefing, the Prime Minister said that President Xi invited her to visit China in July. “I’ll go,” she said, adding that the dates of the tour are being worked on.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also said that she would visit China to talk about repatriation of Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine state in the face of ethnic cleansing there. “I hope that I would be successful in dealing with the Rohingya issue with China,” the PM said.

Bangladesh and China embarked on a strategic partnership in 2016 during the visit of Xi Jinping. Bangladesh also joined his flagship Belt and Road Initiative, although China has backed Myanmar on the Rohingya refugee issue in the international forum.
