China and Peru will continue working to promote in-depth development of bilateral relations, as this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Two Countries, Chinese Ambassador to Peru Liang Yu said recently.

The Ambassador said that the Chinese Embassy in Peru managed to overcome challenges and difficulties in doing its bit to promote the development of China-Peru Relations amid the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020.

China has been actively carrying out cooperation with Peru in combating the coronavirus and deepening political mutual trust between the two countries, the Ambassador said.

“The Chinese people from all walks of life have provided their best possible support and assistance to Peru to the best of their ability, which has met the urgent needs of Peru. We have also sent medical teams to Peru to provide on-site guidance in its fight against the epidemic,” said Liang.

In 2020, China continued to be Peru’s largest trading partner and a major source of investment. China and Peru have carried out practical cooperation in various fields and achieved fruitful results. The cooperation in the research and development of COVID-19 vaccines is also impressive, said Liang.

“At present, the Phase III trial of Sinopharm-produced COVID-19 vaccine is underway in Peru, and has entered a critical stage. A total of 12,000 volunteers have been vaccinated. The President of Peru, the Foreign Minister and the Minister of Health of Peru and other officials have expressed their great confidence in the Chinese vaccine many times, and they are eager to purchase the Chinese vaccine to help Peru overcome the epidemic at an early date,” he said.

Liang said that the year 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of Peru’s independence and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Peru. China and Peru will hold a series of celebration activities in the further development of bilateral relations, according to Liang.

“2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Peru and the 200th anniversary of Peru’s independence. This is a great and happy event in the history of the development of bilateral relations. The two sides attach great importance to the celebration.

The Embassy is making elaborate plans for the celebration and will make joint efforts with the Peruvian government and Chinese enterprises operating in the country, including overseas Chinese and Chinese in Peru.

According to the situation of the epidemic, a series of celebration activities, including receptions, symposiums, seminars, artistic performances, and the publication and issuance of commemorative books and stamps, will be held both online and offline, so as to further deepen China-Peru friendship, multiply the positive impact and promote China-Peru relations,” he added.

“The ‘Belt & Road Initiative’ has brought historic opportunities for upgrading China-Peru cooperation by connecting with Latin America. The friendly cooperation between China and Peru enjoys broad prospects. The two sides will further align their development strategies and consolidate cooperation in trade, energy and mining, infrastructure, finance and other areas of traditional strength.”

“At the same time, in response to the characteristics of the post-COVID era, China and Peru would explore and strengthen cooperation in emerging areas such as smart cities, digital economy, remote education and medical care, and constantly explore new points of growth, so as to bring the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Peru to a new level,” he said.
