China and Venezuela’s Publishing Institutions signed a strategic cooperation agreement on Sunday in Caracas. The move is regarded as important to strengthen the two countries cooperation in Press and Publishing as well as in translation of each other’s works.

As an Event of the ongoing 15th Venezuela International Book Fair, a ceremony was held to confer certificates to new members of the Publishing Consortium of Belt & Road Countries. Seven Venezuelan Institutions, including Simon Bolivar University, officially joined the organisation.

In August 2017, China Renmin University Press initiated the Belt & Road Academic Publishing Alliance. In 2019, the Alliance was renamed as the Publishing Consortium of Belt & Road Countries.

Zhao Haiyun, an Official with the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said at the ceremony that the cultural cooperation between China and Venezuela is just beginning, and the cooperation in publishing industry is an important part of cultural exchanges.

He also said the cooperation in the field of press and publishing is the current focus of the two countries’ cooperation.

Raul Cazal, Deputy Minister of Culture of Venezuela, attended the ceremony. He said the two peoples are closely linked, and he hopes that the two countries’ cultural exchanges could be enhanced through the cooperation in translation and publishing.

“China and Venezuela have remained close in contact, and the Venezuelan people are very interested in what is happening in China today. They want to learn more about Chinese culture, including learning the Chinese language,” said Cazal.

So far more than 300 publishers, academic institutions and professional organisations from 56 countries and regions, including China, the United States and India, have joined the publishing consortium.
