Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that Kiribati’s President Taneti Mamau and his Country stand on the right side of history by resuming Diplomatic ties with China.
President Xi made the remarks when holding talks with President Mamau following a Welcome Ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China and Kiribati resumed diplomatic relations in September 2019 on the basis of the One China Policy, after the Central Pacific Island Country severed the so-called “diplomatic ties” with the Taiwan.
President Xi said the resumption of diplomatic ties fully embodies the strategic vision and political courage of Kiribati, and China speaks highly of the decision.
The Chinese President said China respects the equality of all nations either large or small, and will live up to its promise of peaceful development.
He also vowed to encourage more Chinese enterprises to do business in Kiribati.
For his part, President Mamau said Kiribati’s choice is made out of its confidence and trust in China, reaffirming its adherence to One China Policy and respect of China’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity.
Kiribati is willing to work with China to improve bilateral ties to benefit both peoples, President Mamau said.
Concluding the meeting, President Xi and President Mamau witnessed the Signing of bilateral Cooperation documents on jointly advancing the building of the Belt & Road Initiative in Beijing.
President Mamau is paying a State visit to China from January 4 to 11.
