Cambodian Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn on Saturday concluded his official visit to China and returned to the Kingdom after furthering cooperation between both countries.

During Mr. Sokhonn’s trip, both countries agreed to cooperate in the implementation of the Action Plan on Forging Cambodia-China Community of Shared Future 2019-2023.

The action plan was signed in April in order to bring closer cooperation on political security, expand investments, trade and economic relations, and increase tourism and cultural exchanges.

Mr. Sokhonn left the Kingdom on Thursday and concluded his three day trip to Beijing on Saturday. He was invited by Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi with the purpose of further strengthening cooperation and ties between both countries.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mr. Sokhonn paid a courtesy call on Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Wang.

It said that Mr. Li welcomed Mr. Sokhonn during his first official visit to China and expressed “great satisfaction” with the consolidation of the long-lasting traditional relations of friendship between both countries that is based on respect and win-win cooperation.

“His Excellency Li Keqiang reaffirmed that China will continue to assist Cambodia’s socio-economic development and will lend full support for the success of the 13th ASEM Summit in Cambodia in 2020,” the statement said.

“Both foreign ministers shared the view that relations and mutual political trust between Cambodia and China is now stronger than ever before,” it added. “It’s thanks to the frequent high-level exchanges which should be maintained.”

It said that Mr. Sokhonn and Mr. Wang also stressed the importance of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative for promoting connectivity and ensuring that BRI projects in Cambodia become an example of success.

“They also talked at length on the development of regional architectures, the impact of a China-US trade war and on further strengthening cooperation in the international fora and contribute to regional and global peace, security, and development,” it said.

It added that Mr. Sokhonn also expressed gratitude to Mr. Wang for reaffirming that China will do its best to encourage more companies to invest in Cambodia and expand the access to the Chinese market for Cambodian products.

He also expressed gratitude to Mr. Wang for China’s support of Cambodia’s ongoing reform to diversity its industry and improve business competitiveness.

According to a Xinhua report, Mr. Li said China supports Cambodia in choosing a development path in accordance with its national situation.

“China stands ready to enhance the synergy of development strategies with Cambodia, promote cooperation in key areas and jointly build a China-Cambodia community with a shared future,” the Xinhua report noted.

“He said China is willing to intensify coordination and collaboration with Cambodia under the frameworks of China-Asean and Lancang-Mekong cooperation and forge ahead with negotiations for the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, so as to safeguard a stable environment for development in the region.”
