China and Suriname decided to upgrade their relationship to a strategic partnership of cooperation. The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Suriname’s President Desire Bouterse at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi said that China and Suriname have always been supporting, understanding and trusting each other for the past 43 years since they established the diplomatic relationship.
China is willing to work with Suriname to take the opportunity of jointly building the Belt & Road to push bilateral relations to a higher level, Xi said, adding that both countries should understand and support each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns.
China will, as always, support Suriname’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and accelerate economic and social development
President Xi said.
Xi also said that both countries should deepen cooperation in traditional areas such as infrastructure construction, agriculture, forestry, fishery, communications and energy, and expand cooperation in new areas such as new energy, digital economy, tourism and blue economy.
China and Suriname should maintain communication and coordination on global issues, practice multilateralism, build an open world economy and safeguard the common interests of the two countries and other developing countries, Xi said.
China always respects the right of the Latin American people to choose their own development path, supports the integration progress of Latin American countries and supports them to handle regional issues through dialogue and consultation, Xi said.

Hong Kong affairs are entirely China’s internal affairs, and Suriname firmly opposes any external interference in China’s internal affairs, said Bouterse.
Bouterse said that Suriname is willing to continue to strengthen exchanges with China at all levels, enhance political mutual trust, expand economic and trade cooperation and deepen people-to-people and cultural exchanges so as to take the opportunity of jointly building the Belt & Road to upgrade the strategic level of bilateral relations.
Suriname is ready to work with China to uphold multilateralism, international law and basic norms governing international relations, Bouterse said, adding that Suriname is willing to play an active role in promoting the development of relations between Latin America and China.
Both leaders also witnessed the signing of a series of cooperation documents after the meeting and released the Joint Press Communique between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Suriname.
