President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer met with Chinese State Councillor & Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Bern on Tuesday.
President Maurer asked Foreign Minister Wang to convey his cordial greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He said that Switzerland-China relations are developing smoothly and have always been in the forefront of Europe-China relations.
Switzerland admires the great achievements made by China in its development, fully supports the Belt & Road Initiative put forward by President Xi, and believes that the initiative will serve as a bridge between China and Europe, help improve the quality of China-EU cooperation and bring great opportunities to Switzerland and Europe, he said.
Maurer said that Switzerland hopes to further consolidate political mutual trust with China and deepen cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, finance, environmental protection and innovation. Swiss enterprises have become the beneficiaries of China’s first round of opening up, and Switzerland welcomes Chinese enterprises to invest in Switzerland.
China is a stable and positive force for world peace and prosperity, and Switzerland is willing to strengthen communication with China on international and regional issues and jointly practice multilateralism and free trade, the president said.
Wang conveyed President Xi’s sincere greetings to Maurer. He said that adhering to the pioneering spirit of daring to be the first, Switzerland has been able to accurately grasp the trend and direction of historical development and create a number of firsts in its exchanges with China, reflecting Switzerland’s long-term strategic vision.
China is willing to take the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year as an opportunity and the joint construction of the Belt & Road Initiative as a new driving force to better combine China’s market potential with the strength of “made in Switzerland,”, carry forward the open spirit of win-win cooperation and raise the level of cooperation between the two countries, Wang said.
Wang added that China attaches great importance to the unique role and influence of Switzerland as a traditional neutral country and an important resident country of the United Nations, and is willing to work with Switzerland to safeguard multilateralism, build an open world economy and defend the basic norms of international relations.
On the same day, Wang also co-chaired the second round of the China-Switzerland Foreign Minister Strategic Dialogue with Swiss Federal Councillor & Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
