Construction of China’s First single High-Speed Railway Tunnel with four lines and extra large cross section has drawn to conclusion on Wednesday in Taizhou City of Zhejiang Province in East China, a major step towards the full operation of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou intercity High-Speed Railway.

The Xiabeishan Tunnel, located in Jiaojiang District of Taizhou City has two subordinate tunnels with a total length of 596 meters.

Two tracks out of the four lines in the middle of the tunnel are the main lines of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou intercity high-speed railway, and the other two tracks are reserved for the coastal passenger lines.

The maximum running speed allowed through the tunnel is 350 kilometers per hour.

“The Xiabeishan Tunnel has the largest cross section among all of the high-speed railway tunnels in China. Its excavated section has reached 356 square meters. Other tunnels of the Railway are constructed with double-lines, and the thickness of those tunnel walls is only about 30 cm, but this tunnel reaches 70 cm,” said Ma Xiaodong, the Chief Engineer of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou intercity high-speed railway project of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd.

“The Xiabeishan tunnel is seen as the highest risk in the whole section of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou Railway.

Its successful completion lays a solid foundation for timely laying of railway track, which is expected to take four months to complete,” said Ma Xiaodong, the Chief Engineer of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou intercity high-speed railway project of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd.

The Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou Railway is China’s first high-speed railway with private enterprises holding the controlling share. The cumulative investment of about 32 billion yuan (about 4.8 billion U.S. dollars) has been put into its construction by the end of October.

As a major controlled project of the Hangzhou-Shaoxing-Taizhou intercity high-speed railway, the smooth completion of the Xiabeishan Tunnel will greatly promote the opening to traffic of the whole Railway by the end of 2021.

Upon completion, it will also effectively accelerate the integration of the Wenzhou and Taizhou City into the Yangtze River Economic Belt, realizing the “one-hour traffic circle” of Zhejiang Province, and help the Yangtze River Delta achieve the integrated development with higher quality.
